The Theatre Expansion is
a non-profit company of professional theatre and dance artist,
committed to producing work that bridges the gap between theatre,
dance and other art forms.
This philosophy is rooted in ancient traditions. Before people
could speak, they moved. The most basic forms of theatre began
with hunters telling stories to their families, of the day’s
quest for food, through imitation, mime and gesture. In other
words, they performed the story for their audience in character.
At this time, theatre and creative movement were synonymous with
each other.
Through the years, theatre and dance have drifted from each
other, becoming different art forms with different cultures that
follow them. The Theatre Expansion strives to incorporate this
idea of combining movement and theatricality. Using a dancer’s
expressive body as well as an actor’s insightful voice
to tell a story in one evening’s performance. Hence, we
choose theatre pieces that not only present an entertaining and
socially relevant human condition, but also are conducive to
movement.
We stage productions several times a year in various locations,
bringing our mission to different neighborhoods in the Providence
area. Our season traditionally begins with our Dancestravaganza concert and fundraiser, which showcases local and regional work
from many talented dance and movement artists. In 2005 this event
was featured in the Carriage House Stage’s Spring Series
of Guest Artists. Past participants have included Deb Meunier
(Fusionworks Dance Company) Joan Merwyn, Phaze II Dance Troupe,
Nathan Andary (Andary Dance) and more.
Following this event comes our Main-Stage theatre productions
adapted with contemporary Dance and movement characterization.
Past productions included The Normal Heart, Double
Infidelity, Einstein’s Dreams, The Room and The
Dreamer Examines his Pillow. To schedule a booking or to get further information,
